Perched on the slopes of Mount Carmel, overlooking Israel's Mediterranean coast an hour from Tel Aviv, the port city of Haifa is the third largest city in Israel and the major city in the north of the country.  Haifa is home to Jews, to Christians, and Muslims.  It is the world center of the Baha’i faith and a model of peaceful coexistence among its communities.  This cultural and linguistic diversity is replicated in the student body of The University of Haifa, numbering 17,000 students.

The university is located on a southern ridge of Mount Carmel, adjacent to a large national park, overlooking the bay and the beach. It is comprised of six faculties and five schools, and embraces the link between academic excellence and social responsibility as its credo. Campus attractions include the Hecht Museum, specializing in archeology and housing a wing devoted to a 2,400 year old boat discovered near the Sea of Galilee.  The campus is also home to the largest IBM research center outside the United States.

Linguistics and language sciences are taught in several departments across faculties. The Humanities Faculty hosts the only Sign Language Research Lab in Israel.
